State of the River Edition
State of the River

BVPA held our Annual State of the River event Thursday evening September 22nd for the 1st time since 2019 and boy was it a hit! This year we saw our Partners in Preservation and plenty of volunteer presenters from local organizations, nonprofits and University Departments come together to network and educate attendees on their various projects, research, events, water quality issues, conservation efforts, and more. While the event, and food and drink, was hosted by BVPA with funds from our sponsors, the charrette style engagement could not have been successful without the participation of the presenters who donated their time and resources to making this event special. Highlights include Louisiana Dept. of Environmental Quality, Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District and BVPA's technical committee discussion of the changes to our Vermilion River's designated use in the 2022 Integrated Report, Bayou Vermilion District's new septic inspection program helping to minimize fecal pollutant contamination in our waterways, the Teche Project's upcoming Shake Your Trail Feathers event (October 22nd) and their recent successes installing bayou access points, TRAIL and Parish Proud's recreation and conservation efforts to involve local community members and volunteers, UL Biology Department's study on wetland habitats and use of innovative GIS technology, the UL Civil Engineering Department's updated flood mitigation modeling, Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries excellent fisheries educational materials, LCG's Environmental Quality Divisions fun pollution prevention game, and many many more! If you missed out on this event next year, keep an eye out for our Annual State of the River events occurring each year in September!

Below are some introduction slides from our State of the River event.
Not all introductory slides are included here. Some of the content will be in future newsletters.
Painted Rain Barrel Silent Auction
Several of the painted rain barrels from our contest were auctioned off at the State of the River event where the silent auction raised $380. Our "Frida" rain barrel from Teurlings High School was purchased by Kim Fournet and the "Swamp Water Band" from STM High School was purchased by Brian Kidd.
Bayou Fest Boat Parade

Members of BVPA and the public participated in Bayou Vermilion Districts Annual Boat Parade and Bayou Fest 2022. The 10 mile trip down river, while hot, was filled with music, friendship, and awesome nature along our community's beautiful red bayou. The festival activities concluded at Southside Park with more music and delicious food. Mark your calendars and join us next year! Or if you are a home owner along the river, make sure to come out and wave at the participants, for more info or to stay up-to-date on river activities - join BVPA at thebvpa.org.
