10th Annual River Symposium: Small Community Actions Inspire Big Community Change
The River Symposium will be held on Friday, May 09, 2025 from 8:00am to 2:30pm at the LITE Center on Cajundome Boulevard in Lafayette, LA.
This year’s speakers are community and environmental activists who work tirelessly to implement big change through small community actions. Alex Lazard, Executive Director of the Lafayette Public Trust Finance Authority, will serve as this year’s keynote speaker. He will be opening this year’s River Symposium with his current and past experiences inspiring and activating community initiatives as a Director of a public trust authority, municipal government Urban Planner, Youth Pastor and community thought leader. Below is a list of the themes that will be explored throughout the day during this year’s presentations and panel:
grant funded community-based projects in response to a major crisis,
empowering youth to take local action,
lessons learned from successful examples of community engagement and grass roots environmental initiatives,
the importance of partnerships with organizations with like-minded missions,
and equitable and sustainable community engagement practices.
A few of the speakers and organizations presenting at this year’s event include the following:
Tina Bingham, Community Development Director of Lafayette Habitat for Humanity and Executive Director of McComb-Veazey Neighborhood Coterie.
Todd Reynolds, Executive Director of GROUNDWORK New Orleans.
Sarah Mary Toce-Donlon, Development Director of Parish Proud.
Patti Holland, Executive Director of The TECHE Project.
As usual, the symposium will also include a one-hour panel discussion to be moderated by veteran News Anchor, Scott Brazda!
The BVPA believes that effective, sustainable and equitable community engagement and activation, even with the smallest of initiatives, is critical to solving the Vermilion River’s most challenging problems. We hope that our speakers this year can help inspire community level actions that will create big change for the health of our watershed environment.
This one-day educational event will have a Light breakfast at 7:30 AM and lunch will be provided. Food by Joey's. Vegetarian options are available.
